Event to offer support to caregivers

Nash Hospice and Palliative Care will be hosting a Care for the Caring event for people who are the primary caregiver to family members with extensive health needs from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Nash General Hospital auditorium.

Care for the Caring was developed to help local caregivers learn how to create a healthy balance between taking care of others and taking care of themselves and to learn about the resources available to them as caregivers in the community.

“Caregivers are special people. They spend most of their time caring for someone else and thinking about that person when they are away, but a lot of times they forget that they have to take care of themselves too — and that’s why we felt the need to create this event,” said Keith Griffin, chaplain for Nash Hospice.

Sherri Alligood, director of Nash Hospice and Palliative Care, said it is OK to seek out support.

“We have found that many caregivers out there believe they are alone in this and that it would be an admittance of defeat if they asked for help, but that is simply not true,” she said. “There are many resources out there to help support them physically, spiritually and emotionally.”

The Care for the Caring event is open to all local residents. During the program, there will be time for discussion, questions and fellowship. Light refreshments will be provided.
